Montrose Sailing Club is situated on Esk Road, Montrose, Angus. We sail in Montrose Basin which means the times you can go sailing depend on when the tide comes in.
Generally there is about 3 and a half hours sailing per sailing day, straddling high tide, so we’re usually around from about an hour before the stated start time rigging and pottering.
A little bit of history
The Montrose Sailing club was formed on the 5th May 1964 when a public meeting was held in the Park Hotel for those interested in the formation of a club to sail on the Basin.
Twenty three people attended this meeting and a club was formed and office bearers and committee elected. At the first committee meeting it was agreed that the club recommended dinghies would be: Enterprise , GP14, Graduate and Heron.
Over the years the original dinghy park has increased in size and the clubhouse has changed from the original small wooden shed to a prefabricated concrete building (acquired from Glaxo) with changing rooms added later on.
The club nowadays
The club has around 36 regular members of all ages and anyone is welcome. The club is open from April until October each year with sailing taking place most weekends depending on the tides in the basin.
Most members have their own boats but the club owns 7 dinghies which are available for anyone without their own boat. These boats are of various sizes, from an Oppy (child’s solo craft) up to a 2 man GP14.
There is a hire charge of £5 per day, which applies after the first year of membership.
The complete fleet is :
1 x Oppy
2 x Laser Radials
1x Laser
1 x Graduate
1 x GP14
420 dinghy
The Club includes keen racers to members who are just happy just to potter around and enjoy sailing on the Basin.
Our current membership is about 30 families, and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in sailing then drop us a line via our contacts page or come along on one of the sailing days and speak to any of the members.
We will usually be about from about an hour before the start times shown in the sailing timetables and will be pleased to let you try your hand at the sport. Once you are sure that you want to join you can fill in the membership form which can be found on the download page.
