RNLI SAFETY BOAT TRAINING
What a brilliant evening, with even the weather cooperating. we had a lot of interest, and willingness to get wet in the cause of improving our capsize and recovery skills.
The lads from the RNLI ILB were very helpful, demonstrating in both RIBS how to recover sailors into the safety boat. The message to take away is probably “STROPS”
(NOT little hissy fits, but lifesavers).
After that session, the ILB took Chris and Andrew round to the railway bridge to practise fast manoeuvring, before some slow exercises beside the warning mark just off Wharf Street.
Close in to shore, Craig,Paul and Bryan were supervising capsize drill with Blue Machine, amid much hilarity.Everyone came away much more confident of what they would do in the event of being unexpectedly in the water.
Kathy, sacrificially, passed up her opportunity to get soaking wet in favour of photographing all the activity, while managing to provide enough barbecue food to feed an armada of sailors. Its difficult to describe how nice it is to get back to the beach and that BBQ aroma.
Once again, thanks to Ray Wilkie RNLI Sea Safety Officer and the ILB crew for giving us their time, and sharing their experience with us.
